Biofilm is a "mass of bacteria": bacteria in your mouth (such as cavity-causing and gum-disease bacteria) band together, form a "film" that works like a strong barrier, and stick to the surface of your teeth. It may help to picture the slimy coating that builds up in a drain.
Biofilm is very stubborn. It is almost impossible to wash away with daily rinsing and ordinary tooth brushing alone. If left alone, it turns into hard "tartar" and makes gum disease worse. That is why it is essential to have it regularly broken up and removed at a dental clinic with specialized equipment (such as AIRFLOW).
